A web of radial splits, cracks on the triplex windshield.

If you’ve found yourself in a situation where you need a new windshield, don’t panic. The experts at Smiley’s Glass are here to help you with the best quality materials and service. We follow strict safety standards as prescribed by the Auto Glass Safety Council’s Automobile Glass Replacement Safety Standard (AGRSS) process. Once we have your new windshield installed, there are a few things you can do to protect yourself and your investment.

The Don’ts

Some of the best ways to care for your new windshield involve leaving it alone after installation. By that, we mean that you should not be driving around for at least one hour afterward. The urethane layers will need time to dry and properly cure after our technicians put the windshield in place. We recommend customers avoid using the vehicle for even a few hours if you’re able to. After one hour, your glass will be strong enough to pass Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards, but after a few hours, the cure will be even more durable.

Another thing you should not do immediately after your new windshield service is take it to a car wash or using a power washer. If a wash is unavoidable, you should choose a hand wash over the automatic washers.

The last thing on our list of things to avoid is slamming doors. When you open and close your vehicle’s doors it changes the pressure within the cab. Slamming will cause that pressure to be even more intense and that is not good for a new windshield. You want to make sure to lighten the unnecessary burden of pressure during this time. It would also be a good idea to avoid potholes and excessively bumpy roads.

The Do’s

The best thing you can do for your windshield is to drive safely. We know that it isn’t always the owner’s fault when it comes to windshield damage, but avoiding risky maneuvers and excessively aggressive driving will help you to maintain your new glass. Also, in the warm Virginia summer, it would be a good idea to leave your windows slightly cracked. Glass expands and contracts with temperature changes. When you leave a little room for the pressure to escape you’re putting less strain on your new windshield. Additionally, if you notice anything out of the ordinary with your new Smiley’s Glass windshield you should give us a call to come back out.
