Broken Windshield Glass

Broken windshields are not simply a cosmetic nuisance, they can be dangerous. It is important to never drive for extended periods with a broken windshield in order to keep yourself and your passengers safe. At Smiley’s Glass, we understand the importance of replacing broken car glass and make every effort to service your vehicle within 24 hours of receiving your request. Here are the reasons to make the call as soon as possible when you notice cracks in your windshield or other areas of glass on your vehicle.

It’s Against the Law!

In Virginia, there are detailed restrictions on the size and types of cracks allowed on windshields. If you have a scratch greater than 6.25 inches, you will need to repair that immediately. Also, cracks larger than 1.5 inches in diameter on the bottom three inches of the windshield are impermissible. Moreover, if your windshield has multiple cracks, it may mean you are driving illegally. A certified auto glass technician will be able to tell you if your windshield is compliant or not.

Structural Integrity

Cracks and broken pieces in your car’s windshield can affect the structural integrity of the vehicle. Windshields play a crucial role in the engineering of a car, not just for seeing. The design of the windshield is done in a way to ensure safety to the passengers. According to NAPA, the glass strengthens the chassis and helps the roof resist being crushed in a rollover or other type of collision. If your car windshield is broken, the integrity of the vehicle will be damaged in the event of a crash, putting you and your passengers in danger. It is impossible to determine whether specific cracks or scratches will cause you to lose structural integrity in your vehicle, but it is not worth the gamble.

Now that you are aware of the dangers of a broken windshield, you may be ready to remedy the issue. If you’re not sure whether you have to repair or replace, we can help you make the best decision for your situation.

Repair or Replace?

If you are debating on whether or not repair or replacement is the best answer for you, we understand. There are a couple of things to consider, though, prior to going the repair route. First, there is a chance in any repair that the chip or crack may “run” during the process. Secondly, there is a chance that there will be distortion in the windshield at the site of the chip or crack. If you don’t want to hassle with the chance of distortion or increased damage, we always suggest a total replacement. Your insurance may even cover the service if your budget is what is stopping you from a complete replacement.
